Job title   Youth and Family Worker

Location  Bamford Chapel and Norden URC, Rochdale

Responsible to  The Worker will be employed by Bamford Chapel and Norden URC (the “Church”)

Purpose and Objectives:

This will be a new post within the Church where the post-holder will be responsible for developing a programme of Christian-based activities for children and families within the Church and community in consultation with the elders and in accordance with the Church’s Christian vision. The post-holder will be working with the existing base of volunteers, children, young people and families and developing new outreach opportunities to encourage new families to participate in Church activities. The post-holder will also work with the elders to develop a Christian community hub which includes children and families and focus on growing the church and sharing our faith in the community

 

Main Responsibilities:

  1. Work collaboratively with the existing groups and organisations to encourage and extend provision for families and children
  2. Maximise use of the church’s extensive facilities, grounds and resources for the benefit of the church and community
  3. Look into and encourage/lead, alongside current worship leaders, appropriate forms of Christian worship for young people and their families
  4. Plan and deliver Christian-themed holiday clubs/play schemes for local children and their families
  5. Establish links and liaise with schools and other local organisations to develop opportunities to outreach to children and their families to explore Christian faith and values
  6. Use appropriate social media to share information about opportunities for children and their families driven by the Church and reflecting Christian values
  7. Work with existing team members to recruit, support and motivate new volunteers

Practicalities of role

  • This is a budget-limited post which is expected to last for 2 years initially
  • Flexible working hours which will be discussed and agreed with your line manger on a weekly/monthly basis
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required to accommodate Church events and meetings
  • Attend Elders’ and Church meetings, on request
  • The main place of work will be at the Church premises. However, the post-holder will be permitted to work flexibly (including home working), subject to the organisation’s requirements 
  • The post-holder will be provided with a laptop for the purposes of undertaking the role
  • Undertake appropriate training programmes and be committed to current, best safeguarding practices
  • Participate in shaping a renewed vision for the Church
  • Attendance as appropriate at Church services and events to gain an understanding of our practices, and get to know our congregation

 

Salary and benefits

  • £24 – 27k pa (pro rata for part-time) reviewed annually
  • Workplace pension scheme
  • 20 days holiday plus statutory bank holidays (pro rata for part-time)

6 months probationary period

  • Any job offer is conditional upon an enhanced DBS check
  • 2 satisfactory references
  • Satisfactory right to work checks

Line Management

You will report to a lay member appointed by the Church as your line manager.

The Line Manager will have day to day management responsibility for the post-holder.  To assist the Line Manager in their role, the Church will nominate two Youth Elders to hold quarterly meetings with the Line Manager to ensure they have appropriate support, guidance and escalation routes and to define objectives and performance targets.

  • Good working knowledge and understanding of the Bible and the Christian faith and its teachings
  • Strong leadership skills that are rooted in a deep sense of identity in Christ, and a firm understanding of how to shape a healthy church culture
  • Inspiring teacher and leader
  • IT literate particularly with Word, Excel & PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with social media used by young people and their parents
  • Ability to motivate and enable others to be involved
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Good communication and people skills across all ages
  • Ability to think creatively and to carry their ideas through to completion
  • Ability to create a fun and inviting atmosphere promoting Christianity
  • The ability to bring the Word of God alive for people of different life stages and backgrounds
  • Ability to present reports about their work to elders and to the Church meeting
  • Safeguarding certification
  • First Aid qualification

 

 

 

Experience

  • Experience of working with children and/or young people
  • Experience of working in teams
  • Awareness of statutory regulations surrounding safeguarding and children and youth work in general
  • Working knowledge of the Bible and teachings of Christ 
  • Experience of leading groups
  • Experience of leading Christian worship
  • Ability to offer prayers
  • Experience of missional outreach with children, families and young people
  • Involvement in away days and weekend trips with young people
  • Experience of liaising with schools
